Women’s Reproductive Rights Is About Autonomy

Republicans in states across the country, in congress, and in the Trump administration are waging an all out war against women and women’s access to healthcare.  Republicans are engaged in a full offensive to deny women in the United States their constitutional right to control of their own bodies and their reproductive health care.

The Democratic Party stands firm in our commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of all women to have healthcare decisions be their choice.  For close to half a century Roe V. Wade has been the law of the land and should remain so.

Make no mistake about it, these extreme and cruel laws passed in several Republican controlled states denying women access to legal and safe abortions without any exceptions for rape or incest are how Republicans govern and have the full support of the Republican Party.

The 2016 Republican platform has an anti choice plank that has no exceptions for cases of rape or incest.  Candidate Donald Trump said that women should be punished if they choose to have their pregnancy terminated. We have seen Republican legislatures and governors enact laws calling for doctors to be imprisoned for up to 99 years for providing medical services to their female patients, including those who are victims of rape or incest.  Some of these laws call for punishing women, including punishing women who leave their home state to access their constitutional right to healthcare decisions in another state. Including victims of rape and incest.

In South Carolina Republicans in the legislature with the support of Republican governor McMaster proposed and pushed a bill that would deny women their own decision making after six to eight weeks of pregnancy.  Clearly unconstitutional, yet they still pushed such a bill.

Thankfully Democratic state senators were able to stop the bill from becoming law this legislative session. Democratic lawmakers in South Carolina stand with women and will fully defend their constitutional right.  Democrats believe that healthcare decisions of women are theirs to make. Decisions strictly between a patient and her doctor.

Republicans are not stopping at abortion.  Across the country, in congress, and in the  Trump administration efforts are underway to restrict a women’s access to birth control. Republicans are not only attempting to overturn the constitutional rights under Roe V. Wade, but would reverse Griswold V. Connecticut.  Republicans would outlaw most forms of contraception.

This is not about abortion or contraception.  This is about the radical religious right that controls today’s Republican Party and imposing their patriarchal views on women. The proof is in the legislation and their language.  In Missouri a Republican Representative stated most rape was either “…date rape or consensual rape. Not too many rapes happen from people jumping out of the bushes.” This is how these guys view women.

People of goodwill can have differences of belief when it comes to abortion, contraception, the beginning of life, or sex.  What we can not and will not do is impose those beliefs on others. We do not live in a theocracy. Sadly far too many in today’s Republican Party seem to believe otherwise and are willing to use the legislative process to do so.

Recently President Trump publicly declared that Democrats even support killing babies after they are born.  He went on to state that there are cases where women and doctors have discussed how they would “kill the baby” after childbirth.  That is a complete and total lie. It is disgusting-even for him-to perpetuate such an outrageous falsehood. Sadly this is not the first time this outrageous lie has been used.  Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda used this same lie against the Jewish people of Germany and Europe. It would be giving Trump too much credit to suggest that he even knows this history.  I am guessing that he read this somewhere, believed it, and he found it somehow useful. The depths of Donald Trump’s vileness have no bottom.

Abortion rates are at an all time low due in large part to the success of sex education and the availability of low cost or no cost contraception(much of which can be credited to the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare”). Again, this is not about abortion, this is about the cruel attempts of the radical religious right that controls today’s Republican Party to reimpose their patriarchal society on women.

None of these cruel and extreme laws would stop abortions.  What they would do is stop them from being safe, legal, and rare.

Democrats stand with women and will fight to protect their constitutional rights to choice.

Reproductive rights are about autonomy.  Bodily autonomy is a human right. This attack on a woman’s right to her bodily autonomy is an attack on us all.
